ISB students Smile Club’s overwhelming success

1 November 2009

Middle School student members of International School of Bangkok (ISB) Smile Club succeeded yet again in making Operation Smile patients and volunteers smile with happiness and appreciation.

Over 10 ISB Middle School students traveled to Surin province during Operation Smile’s latest international medical mission. The mission was sponsored by Central Retail and brought over 22 international volunteers from six different countries to work with Thai medical volunteers to provide surgery to over 80 patients at Surin General Hospital.

The Middle School Smile Club members prepared for the mission by gathering stuffed animals and plush toys to add to “Smile Bags” of necessities given to patients who must sleep at the hospital to prepare for surgery. Students showed smaller children how to play games, create pictures with stamps, blow soap bubbles, and create art and craft pieces. On the following day ISB students had the opportunity to observe a surgical operation. The students later had an interesting Q&A session with medical volunteers about the surgery they observed.

Allayne Clegg helped to organize the baking efforts. Bakers included Stacey Dehmer, Susan Meyer, KarenKay Hall, Diane McAlhany, Jenn Bloch, Sabine Mau, Kellie Wilson and Leslie Hinson, and Jeff and Tonya Bordenave and many, many more.

Chevron creates 50 smiles; opens Speech Camp

20 October 2009

Chevron’s first sponsorship of Operation Smile Thailand has resulted in the launch of two simultaneous efforsts in Nakorn Si Thammarat province, a surgical mission and a speech camp.

The surgical mission at Maharaj Nakorn Si Thammarat Hospital in Nakorn Si Thammarat province will provide life-changing cleft palate and cleft lip operations to 40 patients.

In addition to and concurrent with the surgical mission, a speech camp sponsored by Chevron will also be taking part at Maharaj Nakorn Si Thammarat Hospital. The speech camp will be conducted by 10 of Thailand’s leading speech therapists. Fifty children who had received cleft palate and cleft lip operations in the past will receive speech therapy at the speech camp over the course of four days.

Speech therapy is one form of post-operation care that is much needed but scarcely found. Children with cleft lips and cleft lips often have speech impediments. Although cleft palate and/or cleft lip surgery may correct physical conditions, children with speech impediments nonetheless require therapy and practice in how to use the repaired palate or lip to speak properly.

Chevron’s support of the speech camp ensures that children who received operations on prior occasions are more fully healed – that they can eat, drink, and talk as normally as possible. Chevron’s employee volunteers helped to make the speech camp more fun and educational for the children by entertaining the children and providing assistance to the therapists.

BPS Student Philanthropy brings hope to scarred child

9 October 2009

Over the past year, members of the Bangkok Patana School (BPS) Operation Smile Club have dedicated themselves to raising funds for a special young boy in Chiang Mai. Nong Sit was seen on a previous Operation Smile Thailand mission to the region and found a special place in the hearts of these BPS students.

Nong Sit began his life as a normal child in a small village in rural Chiang Mai. When he was about one month old, Nong Sit suffered burns to his face and feet when the cloth his mother had wrapped him in accidentally caught fire. Luckily, the traditional, heavy wrapping used to carry babies on mother’s backs was thick enough to protect Nong Sit’s body but not his face and feet. Nong Sit was shunned by his own community and unable to lead a normal childhood.

Nong Sit has since moved to Chiang Mai city where he has undergone two surgeries at government hospitals. Unfortunately, the two surgeries resulted in infection and additional scarring.

The 250,000 Baht raised by students of BPS will provide Nong Sit with much needed additional surgeries to correct problems from both the original burn and subsequent operations.

This October, two teachers and six students from BPS travelled to Chiang Mai to visit Nong Sit - friendly but shy, Nong Sit eventually revealed to his new friends that he dreamed of serving in the Navy one day.

The students of the BPS Smile Club are already planning their second visit to Chiang Mai to see the results and life changing experience NongSit is about to embark upon.

Operation Smile Supports WHO Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative

25 June 1008

On June 25th, Operation Smile participated in the global launch ceremony of the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative.

Hosted by Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, WHO Regional Director for the Americas, the event highlighted the WHO’s new global campaign to improve the safety of surgical care. The event was attended by ministers of health and world leaders in surgery, anesthesiology and nursing joining together to focus on reducing deaths and complications from surgery globally.

During the ceremony, Dr. Randy Sherman, Operation Smile’s Chief Medical Officer, formally announced Operation’s Smile endorsement of the new WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. The list includes simple safety checks that the WHO team has shown could halve the rate of surgical complications. The list is intended to improve anesthetic safety practices, avoid infections and improve communication among members of surgical teams. Operation Smile is one of almost 200 surgery, anesthesia, nursing and patient societies formally endorsing the checklist.

Major surgery now occurs at a rate of 234 million procedures per year - one for every 25 people - and studies indicating that a significant percentage result in preventable complications and deaths.

"Preventable surgical injuries and deaths are a growing concern," said Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO. "Using the checklist is the best way to reduce surgical errors and improve patient safety."

Operation Smile’s involvement in the WHO Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative is part of the organization’s broader efforts to advocate for and provide high quality, safe surgery in developing countries.

OST received a donation of 1,008,000 THB, on May 13 from Total Access Communication PCL. (DTAC) in honor of Her Royal Majesty Princess Galyani Vadhan, who past away at 84 years of age. This donation will give 84 Thai children who suffer from cleft lips and/or cleft palates a chance to lead a normal life. The medical mission will take place at Bhudhachinnarat Hospital.

This is one of DTAC’s corporate social responsibility campaigns called “Tum-Dee-Took-Wan” (Do The Good Deeds Everyday). This campaign, in partnership with radio station Ruam-Duay-Chuay-Gan Happy station, broadcasts on different local stations in many provinces. Through its radio station network, this campaign successfully spread the word about Operation Smile Thailand’s work to the public.

The campaign’s goal was to have patients register themselves for surgery by sending an SMS to 1677 number free of charge. In return DTAC donated 10 THB for each SMS received. The result exceeded expectations, as they received more than 200,000 SMS in only three weeks. For more information of HRM Princess Galyani Vadhan go to www.soravij.com/galyani.htm
