Mae Sot - December 8 - December 18, 2006

An Operation Smile medical mission team was in Mae Sot, Thailand, for an internationally supported local medical mission from December 8-18, to assist children born with facial deformities. The team of nearly 50 medical and non-medical volunteers worked together at Mae Sot General Hospital and provided 175 children and young adults with free medical evaluations and 100 patients received free reconstructive surgery. Team members from Canada, New Zealand, the Philippines and the United States worked side-by-side with their Thai counterparts to provide new smiles and new hope for children from Thailand.

Since 1997, Operation Smile has conducted missions in six sites in Thailand and medical volunteers have treated more than 4,000 children and young adults in Thailand through international medical missions and local in-country medical programs.

Mae Sot - November 24 - December 2, 2005

An Operation Smile internationally supported local mission took place for the first time in the city of Mae Sot, Thailand. Twenty-three international medical volunteers, from Canada, Colombia, Italy and the United States, worked with a local volunteer medical team from Thailand. These medical professionals provided free medical evaluations to 121 and surgery to 73 children and young adults suffering from cleft lips, cleft palates and other deformities. The volunteer team members included plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nurses, a dentist and speech therapist who worked together at Mae Sot General Hospital.

Surin - October 12 - October 24, 2004

An Operation Smile internationally supported local mission took place in Surin, Thailand, bringing together 17 international medical volunteers with a local volunteer medical team from Thailand. These medical professionals provided free medical evaluations for 162 patients and provided surgery to approximately 100 children and young adults suffering from cleft lips, cleft palates and other deformities. The volunteer team members included plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nurses, dentists and speech therapists conducted this mission at Surin Provincial Hospital.

Based in Bangkok, Operation Smile Thailand performs local missions year round on Thai children and has been able to initiate reconstructive surgery for more than 700 children suffering from facial deformities this year alone in Nan, Nonthaburi, Pitsanulok, Srisaket, Ubon Ratchathani and Bangkok.

Surin - October 8 - October 23, 2002

A team of volunteer medical professionals was in Surin, Thailand, October 8 - 23, 2001, providing free reconstructive surgery to 166 children with facial deformities. Thirty-five international volunteer team members, including plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, nurses, dentists and speech therapists from the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and the United States cared for children who suffer from cleft lips and cleft palates at Surin Provincial Hospital. Since 1997, 995 children and young adults have received treatment through international missions.

The mission was sponsored by Rotary Ohio South, District 6690, Rotary Northeastern Thailand, District 3340 and the Rotary Foundation. Operation Smile also has greatly benefited from the strong support of the Thai Plastic Surgeon Association, which was represented by the team co-leader, Dr. Apichai Angspatt.

Based in Bangkok, Operation Smile Thailand performs local missions year round on Thai children and has been able to initiate reconstructive surgery for more than 600 children suffering from facial deformities this year alone in Issan, Yala, Bangkok and Surin.
